"In an ideal world, we would all be secure and confident all the time. We would eat what we want, and exercise simply to be healthy and strong. We would link arms and take to the streets in the Prettylution declaring, "I AM PRETTY! I ROCK! SHUT UP!" We wouldn't need anyone or anything to reinforce that for us, that's how confident we would be. In an ideal world."--Doom Song
So I'm in a wedding at the end of the month and the bride asked me if I want my makeup done and I'm all, "puh-shaw! I am the queen of makeup!" and then I realized I haven't really worn makeup in like 2 and a half years. Hee.
I still have my stash of course (it's probably all old and gross and will melt my face off or whatever)... my dress is espresso colored... I have blue eyes/brown hair, what kind of good shadow color combos do you guys suggest? Maybe a gold or taupe combo? I have lots of Stila and Mac.
Maybe Oasis and Golightly (gold on the lid, olivey gold as a liner)?
I have been wearing basically no makeup lately unless I am at a party or something. Except foundation. Then, on Sunday, my skin had a coup and basically broke out all over my face. Oh, yeah. I am hawt.
I'm not sure if this should go in makeup or fashion, but I think makeup.
Does anyone have a toiletry bag that they really really love? I'm looking for a good one that will last a while. I realized that I don't have a nice sturdy one and I'd like to invest in a decent one before my August trip to the Pacific NW. I've looked around, but I don't really want a hanging one, and some of the other ones seem either too flimsy or too manly. Anyone have a happy medium?
It's definitely a little mannish, but I use a basic dopp kit for my toiletries (mine's simpler than that, and whole lot cheaper, as they're always on sale in the men's department), and a li'l Clinique GWP bag for my makeup.
If I were looking to invest, I'd probably head for a MAC bag, since they're sleek and simple.
Though if you don't mind checking an extra bag, you can't go wrong with a train case (dirt cheap at vintage stores). I used to use mine all the time when I could carry it on (filled with dangerous liquid products, like my mom's homemade jam).
I think I found mine in camping supplies. It's also quite mannish, but it's very sturdy. Both sides zip up, but one side is mesh, so damp things can go in. You could hang it up, but I usually just lay it flat. It's a bit like this, but without the hangy thing at one side, and both sides zip shut.
I got one a few years ago from The Container Store that I really like, although I use it more for makeup and small items, rather than bigger stuff like shampoo, shower gel, saline solution, etc. It's similar to this one, but in looking, they've got quite a few cases that look like they'd be pretty handy and pretty inexpensive.
I use some camping thing that I stole from my dad. It's great for traveling, and now it's in my gym bag. It has a hanger which is really handy for the gym locker and also hotel bathrooms when there's no counter space.
Yeah, I don't so much mind the mannish thing...but I found the man ones aren't big enough! Thanks for the suggestions. I can't believe I didn't think about checking The Container Store! I used to have this big Clinique bag that I got as a GWP and that thing finally gave out. I realized I should have a decent one that I can just grab and go, even just for my weekends at the Ronald.
Roo, I have a Stephanie Johnson bag that I've had for about 4 years now that I adore. It's the Traveler, maybe? Or the train case? Not sure. But I adore it...the only thing is the top zip on an inside pocket broke years ago, but it's never really stopped me and nothing ever falls out. It's insanely sturdy and easy to clean and really does fit everything I need. I also own a jewelry roll from her that I use all the time. I will DEFINITELY get another bag when this one is done.
A few weeks ago I attended a wedding and wore eye makeup for the first time in forever and a half. I chalked up the burning and watery eyes to exhaustion, but dude, I put on eye shadow today and my eyes have been irritated and watery all day. While I'm very tired, is it possible that I've become allergic to eye makeup? That can't be true, can it?
Meanwhile, my el cheapo toiletries bag by Sonia Kashuk for Target is still hanging in there after 5 years. I have one with handles that has elastic bands in it for holding bottles as well as interior zippered pockets and open spaces. And I got two matching separate zippered pouches that I use for cosmetics. (Ok, confession, I use the larger one for all cosmetics except lip products and the smaller one for all my lippies. We all know I have a lip product problem and the problem goes with me when I travel.)
I keep my toiletries bag packed at all times with spare bottles of stuff I use, cotton swabs, deoderant, hair elastics, toothpaste, tweezers, toothbrush, spare contacts, band aids, etc. That way when I'm travelling I don't have to do much to pack it, except add glasses, contact solution, my razor and my birth control.
I use the Clinique GWP bags also so I am of little help!
In other news - alert the media - I have clear skin!!!!! I have like one tiny little zit and that's it! I really can't remember the last time when I've had clear skin for any length of time. I also didn't wear foundation today, which never happens. In fact - South Africa was SO dry, that I actually needed moisturizer, which I rarely use b/c my skin is usually so oily.
I finally made it out to the Sephora at the West Edmonton Mall yesterday, and picked up a . Tarte Rise and Shine in Pink. Thumbs up to the stain, thumbs down to the "plumping" gloss. I forgot that all these plumpers work by irritating the lips. I will be snapping the gloss out and snapping in the Samantha end of my Jake and Samantha duo to use instead.
I have the orgasm lipgloss and I'd say if anything it's a bit thick and sometimes gloopy. I don't mind it, but I think reviews are mixed on MUA as far as texture goes.
It's weird. I went through a period of, like, no makeup wearing, and all of a sudden I want to buy buy buy makeup all over the place again. I almost have to sit on my hands.
So, more sticky than slick? Because I'm realizing that the sticky makes me crazy. I got a sample of the Clinque plumping stuff and it's incredibly tacky (as in texture, not effect) and awful.
Speaking of gloss, I'm in love with Maybelline Shiny-licious in Chocolate Cherry. Super-cheap, more slick than sticky, and a good amount of color.
So did y'all get the fall Sephora catalog? They're totally featuring my look in that top photo. Well, ok, my makeup only looks that good maybe twice a year, and I'm usually stuck in some horrible bar with it where no one cares. But still, I do a version of that for everyday (on the days when I, you know, leave my apartment). I don't know if I'm pleased about this, because it means finding a good red lipstick will be easier, or distressed, because many girls will be attempting that liner, but are skerred of liquid liner and will try it with pencil and that almost never works. Hm.
I'm similarly torn on the reappearance of matte lipstick. I was a matte girl for so very long, then I made the shift to gloss, and now I don't know how I feel. One thing is certain, though, longer hair goes much better with matte.
